Last year, I was approached by a couple I became good friends with in college. They told me they were looking for a church in the Pittsburgh area, and they wanted to know what I liked so much about Westminster. I responded, “I love that we invest in every generation.” After all, I have my family to look at as excellent examples of this principle in action. Mom and Grandpa ring in the handbell choir. Dad and Grandma have both sung in the Chancel Choir. My sister and I have taken part in many of Westminster’s youth programs. When I joined the youth ministry staff in May of this year, a question I had to ask myself was “How do I effectively add to the ushering in of new generations?”.
This fall, I have had the pleasure of giving a “new beginning,” or rather a revamping, to a college care package project for Westminster’s young adult congregants. From the family members to the students, the eager and nostalgic response to this effort has been astounding. If my past 15 years here at Westminster were not enough, these responses have made it clear how the Westminster congregation has met and continues to meet the needs of all who walk in our doors, past or present. As we enter a new year, I hope that these care packages are just the beginning of how we move forward in extending God’s love to and investing in our future generations.
