March 24

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

– Matthew 6:19-21

We all know what our faith tells us about service…Love our neighbor, what you’ve done for the least of these you’ve done for me, and where your heart is there your treasure will be. God’s message to us about serving others is clear or as Rev. Bruce Lancaster reminded us, these are not complicated instructions.

Westminster serves the lives of more than 10,000 people outside our walls… in City Mission, SHIM, Haiti, India, Homewood, etc. These are just the people Jesus tells us to serve... the poor, the meek, the hungry, and the persecuted.

It can be hard, living in comfort, to be involved with the lives of the people Jesus is telling us to serve. And that’s why Westminster’s outreach and volunteering exist, because they enable us to do what Jesus tells us to do.

It’s often said that joyful givers receive more that those they give to. My involvement in Homewood over the last 10 years has totally changed my life, and it has brought far more joy to my life than I ever knew was possible. Bruce said, “our heart and treasure are always connected.” I pray that all may find a way to participate in serving the least of these and experience the same joy of giving I’ve discovered.

PRAYER:

Lord, remind us, it is always better to give than to receive. Amen.

– Dan Paul
