"Where then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding? It is hidden from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the birds of the air. Abaddon and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’ “God understands the way to it, and he knows its place. For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens. When he gave to the wind its weight, and apportioned out the waters by measure; when he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the thunderbolt; then he saw it and declared it; he established it, and searched it out. And he said to humankind, 'Truly, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.'"

--Job 28:20-28

When I was in my twenties, my father told me a joke: “A teenager thought his parents were so dumb, but by the time he reached the age of 21 his parents had become smart!” It’s all a matter of perspective- and maturity through understanding. As we grow in our knowledge of the Lord and how He expects us to live our lives, this understanding leads to wisdom.

From the very beginning of Creation, God has been all-knowing and ever-present. When we “fear the Lord” we show reverence and acknowledge this awesome power. In this case, the word “fear” does not have its customary meaning of being in danger or being threatened.

It is a blessing to continue to grow in this special understanding that can lead to wisdom in our personal lives.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, during this Lenten Season, help us to search our hearts for an understanding of how you would have us live. Grant us the strength and wisdom to do your will and to do some small thing each day that makes a difference. Amen.
