2023-2024 Season: Teen & Parent Mental Health | Free Speaker Series

Westminster Presbyterian Church offers a speaker series each year, led by experts in their field, on the pressures, expectations, and mental health needs of teenagers and their families. Following the speaker, parents and teenagers are encouraged to hold conversations centered around the topic. All are welcome to attend at no cost.

Useful Tools for Helping Students Understand the World of Social Media in Constructive Ways

Many of us are "always on" scrolling through social media, checking email, or searching the web. Media spaces can be sites that nurture or harm, and become sources of anxiety, jealousy, and despondency. We welcome Dr. Angela Gorrell, who will speak to us about tools to engage social media in constructive ways.

Dr. Angela Gorrell

Dr. Gorrell has taught most recently at Yale University and Baylor University. Angela has been a researcher on numerous grants, is a hired consultant, and is a highly sought-after speaker at both live and online events.

Purpose:

To provide teenagers and parents with a forum for education, discussion, and community regarding a diverse array of mental and emotional health needs.

Who:

Speakers: leaders, professionals, visionaries, or other compelling voices that speak to the identified topic
Attendees: parents of teenagers or pre-teens (parents of elementary aged or older children are likely to benefit as well), teenagers

What:

timely and topic-based speakers and conversations aimed at supporting the mental and emotional health needs of teenagers and parents. 90-minute program with time for lecture, small-group breakout, and large-group discussion.
